We’ve all been guilty of using our garages as a catch-all for storage. In our experience as pro organizers, we’ve found that even with the best intentions, garages are often the most neglected space in a home. So, we wanted to share with you a recent project we completed for an Arcadia client, a busy family with plenty of storage needs. Our exclusive garage organizing services, combined with our partnership with The Container Store, were just what they needed to finally tackle their garage clutter and create a streamlined, functional space that actually works for their lifestyle.

The Challenge: A Garage Full of Stuff, and No System in Place

Like many families, these Arcadia homeowners used their garage as a universal storage space for everything from seasonal décor to sports gear. They already had two ceiling-mounted overhead storage racks installed, but they weren’t using the space efficiently. Items like holiday decorations were taking up valuable floor space, and equipment they used frequently—like golf clubs and kids’ gear—was tough to get to underneath seasonal décor and luggage.

Step One: Edit, Sort, Plan, and Measure

The first step with any of our organizing projects after a consultation and proposal is always to begin by Editing and Sorting. This is where we remove everything from the space and edit, sort, and organize each item. We mean everything. When each item has its home, the system works more fluidly. This means that some things get tossed, some things get donated, and the rest gets sorted into piles to be placed in their new homes once we start installing the organization products.

Before we could install anything, our team took detailed measurements of every wall. We paid close attention to light switches, outlets, garage door openers, and the water heater—making sure that no Elfa component would block access or interfere with essential utilities.

Every inch of this garage had to work smarter, not harder.

Step Two: Designing a Custom Elfa Garage Storage System

Using Elfa’s modular, fully customizable system from The Container Store, we designed a storage system that made sense for this family’s real-world needs. We installed Elfa wall-mounted racks on two of the garage walls, giving the homeowners plenty of vertical storage while keeping the floor clear.

We also reorganized the existing overhead racks—moving Christmas decorations and other infrequently used items up and out of the way, freeing up valuable space below.
