How a Weekly Pantry Restock Sets Me Up for the Week

pantry restocking tips from professional organizer

Want my secret for an organized home? Maintenance and commitment to the organized mindset. No matter how perfectly we categorize our snacks and alphabetize our spices, it will all go out the window if we don’t take a few minutes on occasion to tidy up and restock.

Because home organization is so important to me (and I have two young children at home) a weekly restock and tidy up of my pantry is always necessary. No worries if this doesn’t work for you or isn’t part of your own goals - bi-weekly or even monthly can work too! Remember, it’s all about creating a system that works for you and your family.

Creating an Organization Habit

how to organize my pantry

My goal when tidying up and restocking my pantry is to give myself a fresh slate for a successful week. Because of this, I tend to get groceries and put them away on Sundays. Making this chore a part of your weekly routine can help create a habit that will save you time in the future, like when your child is melting down because they wanted their dinner ten minutes ago and you can’t find the last box of mac and cheese you know is in the pantry.

Creating time for this restock is essential. Because I have organized my pantry, everything has a home and putting away groceries takes less than thirty minutes. Probably less than fifteen, depending on the week! This includes decanting products, filling up snack and cereal canisters, and getting rid of unwanted items. Once the system is in place, it shouldn't take much time!

My other time-saving hack for pantry restock? Order your groceries for pickup or delivery. Having this option, especially over the last year, has saved me SO much time and energy. At least getting your everyday basics done this way can be so helpful!

Having your system and restock plan in place can be a huge stress reliever and makes packing lunches, meal prep, and grocery shopping trips easier throughout the week. Make sure to label your bins to help other family members learn / remember where things go!

Pro Tip: Use your containers and bins to keep yourself accountable when grocery shopping. If six types of potato chips and thirteen different boxes of granola bars won’t fit in your snack or back stock bin, don’t buy them.

5 Steps for a Pantry Restock

Here are the five steps I take every week to restock my pantry and prepare for the week ahead:

  1. TAKE INVENTORY: Get rid of expired products, products you don’t want anymore, and write down a list of what you need.

  2. SHOP / ORDER / PICKUP: Place your pickup order or head to your favorite grocery store.

  3. SORT AND CATEGORIZE: Place items in their designated bins or baskets.

  4. DECANT: Take bulk products out of their boxes and place into appropriate baskets, empty snacks and cereal into their canisters.

  5. TIDY UP: check for items out of place, make sure items are in the correctly labeled bins, and wipe down any dusty surfaces.

Remember…

This is what works for me and my family! The best way to get successfully organized is to take my tips and apply them to your own life in a way that works for you and your family. Always be kind to yourself on your organizational journey and remember why you're doing it. I hope these weekly pantry restock ideas help you in creating a home you love and give you more time to do what’s most important to you.
